Farmers Market Poster Contest

The Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market is inviting artists of all ages to think spring in the dead of a bruising winter and contribute entries to its 2009 farmers market poster contest.

Entries, representing the market on paper, are due Feb. 13, at the West End Building, 4101 Kruse Way. Each year, a youth (under 18) and adult submission is selected for reproduction on posters and other items.

Any medium can be used. The contest is not just open to Lake Oswego residents, but “anybody and everybody,” according to Lake Oswego Parks and Recreation events supervisor Kathy Kern. Last year’s record turnout attracted 90 entries.

Entries will be displayed at the West End Building, Feb. 18 to March 13, for public vote, and remain on display through May. Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market opens May 16.

Invent Your World Challenge

The Lemelson Foundation is offering $20,000 scholarships for inventions that create a positive change. Its “Invent Your World Challenge” is open to all youth between the ages of 12 and 20 in North America and Europe, and ages 12 and 24 everywhere else.

Ask yourself: What can you invent to make life easier, the planet greener, and the world better?

Come up with an invention — a new or adapted technology — and enter the Invent Your World Challenge.

Ashoka GenV and the Lemelson Foundation will support 50 young inventors in using their inventions to create positive change — by providing mentorship, seed funding, networking opportunities, and the $20,000 scholarship.

Ideas are reviewed on an on-going basis and projects can be launched anytime. Round One’s deadline is December 31, 2008.

ExchangesConnect Online Video Contest

An all-expense-paid, two-week cultural exchange is being offered to the four grand prize winners in the ExchangesConnect Online Video Contest sponsored by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Organized in an effort to create an online community of people dedicated to bridging cultures and making a positive difference in the world, the contest is open to entries from people ages 14 and older from all over the world. Videos should be about what “My Culture + Your Culture” means to you.

Videos submitted must be no longer than three minutes in length, containing any form of artistic expression including, but not limited to, dance, spoken word, poetry, and song.

Videos will be judged on originality, creativity, effectiveness, and production quality.

Four winners (two in each of the age categories: 14-17 years and 18+ years; one non U.S., one U.S.) will receive the grand prize.

Members of the ExchangesConnect international social network community will vote on their favorite top 40 video entries, and these entries will then will be ranked by a prestigious panel of judges who are ECA program alumni.

The contest opened December 1, 2008 and closes January 26, 2009. Winners will be announced March 16, 2009.

Video Contest: Gotta Getta GearMax

Martha White® Muffin Mix Challenge™

The makers of Martha White are inviting home bakers to create their own original recipe utilizing at least one of 19 available flavors and enter it in the Martha White® Muffin Mix Challenge™ for a chance to win cash prizes and tickets to the Grand Ole Opry.

Judges will be looking for recipes using a Martha White® muffin mix in a creative new way or as an adaptation of a traditional scratch recipe. Entries will be judged on five evenly-weighted criteria: taste, creativity, appetizing appearance, ease of preparation and appropriate use of product(s).

The Martha White® Muffin Mix Challenge™ officially began on October 6 and will end on December 31, 2008.  Three winners will be chosen by a panel of judges.  The First Prize winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize in addition to a two night stay at the Opryland Resort and Convention Center, two tickets to the Grand Ole Opry, dinner for two at the Old Hickory Steakhouse, two tickets for a cruise aboard the General Jackson Showboat and $500 toward travel expenses. Best American Lamb Family Recipe Contest

The American Lamb Board invites “fans of lamb” to share their most beloved family dishes in its Best American Lamb Family Recipe Contest.

The winning recipe will be announced November 17 and featured on the American Lamb website. The winning contestant will receive a Cast Iron Cookware Set made by American Lambassador Chef Tim Love and a lamb cut of choice to serve a family of 6.

Robeez Photo Contest

Virgin Earth Challenge

A prize of $25 million is being offered for whoever can demonstrate to the judges’ satisfaction a commercially viable design which results in the removal of anthropogenic, atmospheric greenhouse gases so as to contribute materially to the stability of Earth’s climate. Announced by Sir Richard Branson and Al Gore, the prize is designed to encourage a viable technology which will result in the removal of at least 1 billion tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide equivalent per year. The initial closing date for Virgin Earth Challenge is 8 February 2010. If the judges deem that no design submitted by that stage is worthy of the prize, it will re-open for two more year-long phases..
