The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, opposes a proposal before the Richland County Council to purchase a $6.9 million site and establish a new produce market. In an editorial published Sunday, October 25, the newspaper’s editorial board writes:

According to a report in The State, the County Council of Richland County, South Carolina is considering a proposal to establish a new farmers market for small and mid-sized vendors on Atlas Road.

According to the Daniel Island News, the South Carolina community’s “first” farmers market will open April 30 in the hope of stimulating the local economy.
“Daniel Island Business Association (DIBA) members have been working for many months to come up with ideas that would generate traffic on the island to help local businesses,” the newspaper reported.

Ground has been broken on a new State Farmers Market in South Carolina. The new market, located on 174-acre site is off U.S. 321 in Lexington County, should be finished by late spring 2010. Organic produce and seafood will be featured at the market, which will also have a restaurant serving South Carolina grown products.
