10% Growth in Arizona Markets’ Attendance

Attendance at local markets is up more than 10 percent from last year, prompting Valley market groups to roll out nine more.

New farmers markets are expected to open this fall in downtown Glendale, Old Town Scottsdale, Surprise and Buckeye. And smaller, private markets are expected to open this year in Peoria, Queen Creek and Gilbert. The Downtown Phoenix Public Market expects to launch a capital campaign next year to build the city’s first indoor market by 2013.

For cities, the markets serve two purposes: They create a vibrant downtown atmosphere and spur economic activity.

They also help meet residents’ expectations of more local-shopping and grocery-store alternatives at a time when fuel and production costs are driving up food prices.

At the Downtown Phoenix Public Market, attendance is up 30 percent. Vendors rack up $15,963 in sales on an average market day, compared with $10,548 in 2007, a 51 percent increase.

Farmers’ Markets Mushrooming in Maryland

In a summer vexed by food safety worries and gasoline-cost anxiety, farmers’ markets are mushrooming. Growers also report favorable weather conditions as boosting this summer’s harvest - as well as increasing attendance. Consumers say they are shopping for price and assurances that the food comes from farms no more than about 50 miles away.

One way to measure the increased attraction is by the number of markets. The state reports that in 2004, Maryland had 72 farmers’ markets, up from 30 a decade earlier. Last year, there were 74 markets; this year, there are 84.
