New Jersey: Summit Farmers’ Market

Summit Farmers’ Market in Summit, New Jersey, has extended its season to Dec. 21.

At the request of a dozen vendors the association of merchants and downtown property owners that plan special events in Summit — Summit Downtown Inc. — adopted a resolution to extend the Sunday market through Dec. 21, with the exception of selling Christmas trees and wreaths.

The market will be moved from its usual Park and Shop lot on DeForest Avenue to a private lot, either one owned by Wachovia Bank or the Bank of America. Both are adjacent to a park and shop lot. Summit Farmers’ Market will pay a fee for use of the space.

Gleanings: Farmers Market Growers Provide Hope

From Dusty and Dave Krause in the Wadena Pioneer Journal
Wadena, Minnesota

We can serve the cause of life on earth better if we find a place in ourselves that acknowledges the tragedy we are facing and commit to doing whatever we can to move beyond this tragedy. It’s about being modest by living locally, abandoning doom and gloom and moving toward commitment and hope.

The growers at our farmers markets make this commitment by supplying us with locally grown products. By extending their commitment to the land, the local economy, the environment and our well being, they are giving us hope!

North Carolina: Carrboro Farmers’ Market

Like many other year-round markets, the Carrboro Farmers’ Market in Carrboro, North Carolina, is making a transition to its winter program with revised hours and a changeover to fall and winter produce, crafts and meats.

Now in its second year as a year-round market, the Carrboro market reduced its Saturday morning hours to 9 am to noon on November 8. A special Thanksgiving market will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 3 to 6 p.m.

Seasonal produce in Carrboro this time of year means greens such as arugula, kale and collards, as well as root vegetables and mushrooms.

Alberta: Calgary Farmers’ Market

Supporters of the Calgary Farmers’ Market are mobilizing to keep the market in its present location at Currie Barracks. City administrators are looking to move the market to another site once its lease runs out at Currie Barracks, now owned by The Canada Land Company, which is planning to develop the area as a sustainable
community.

A statement on the Calgary Farmers’ Market website reads:

“The Calgary Farmers’ Market has negotiated an extension for the Calgary Farmers’ Market to November 30, 2010. This extension is a cooperative effort to bridge the Calgary Farmers’ Market to a new location which is not on Currie Barracks.”

Members of the South Calgary Community Association, however, “are mobilizing in an effort to convince developer Canada Lands to include the popular market as part of its plan to redevelop the site,” according to the Calgary Herald

The Crown corporation has stated that it cannot renew the market’s lease because the market’s size and large parking requirements don’t fit with plans to build a sustainable community.

New Jersey: Jamesburg Farmers’ Market

“The only thing sweeter than the corn was the success of this year’s farmers market,” the East Brunswick Sentinel exclaims about the new Jamesburg Farmers’ Market.

The new market, held on Saturdays from July to October, was more successful than organizers had hoped. Their goal was to draw an average of 200 visitors to the market each day; the market drew twice that many.

The Jamesburg Revitalization Coalition, which organized the market, hopes to have eight to 12 vendors take part next year, about twice the number this year. Some 20 potential sellers have already been contacted.

Texas: Hutto Mercantile Farmers Market and Crafts Show

The Hutto Mercantile Farmers Market and Crafts Show — which has been operating in Hutto, Texas, since July — has abruptly closed down in the wake of an ethics complaint made against a Hutto City council member who was also a vendor at the market. The complaint questions whether the council member behaved unethically in voting to approve the market and then setting up a booth at the market to sell jewelry.

The market’s general manager told the Austin American-Statesman his market has not been accused of any wrongdoing: “We wanted to participate and be city supporters. We can’t be associated with an ethics investigation.”

The council member in question rented a booth at the market for $25 a week, but reportedly received no special treatment or reduced rate.

Florida: Bonita Springs Farmers Market

The Bonita Springs City Council in Bonita Springs, Floriday, has given its approval for a weekly farmers market at Riverside Park on Old 41 Road.

The new market will be held on Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is expected to draw vendors and visitors from throughout Southwest Florida.
